The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
