Approximately twenty-five thousand households in south-east Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms impacted the region, producing strong winds hitting over 100 km/h.

Large Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Destruction

Homeowners observed large ice chunks measuring up to seven centimeters in certain regions. Weather authorities confirmed that different parts across Queensland had been affected by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were working to restore power throughout the impacted areas, with dozens of response units working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Storm Challenges

At the same time, approximately one thousand households in Victoria also encountered energy failures after the metropolitan area recorded its most precipitation in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services responded to over five hundred requests for assistance across the region, mainly for property damage but also for downed trees and inundation.

During the peak on yesterday, more than 28k electricity consumers in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

Tomorrow was predicted as the heaviest precipitation period, with ongoing thunderstorm potential anticipated across different parts of both states.

Health Warning

Public health experts warned that there was an greater possibility of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after past events where similar conditions led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
