In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
