The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
