Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
